WOCA Master Oil vs Diamond Oil Active: when to use which

WOCA Denmark is one of the longest-established penetrating oil manufacturers in Europe, with a reputation built on quality and consistency since 1988. Two of their products dominate the Australian trade: Master Oil and Diamond Oil Active. Both are penetrating hard wax oils, both zero VOC, both manufactured to ISO 9001. They are not interchangeable, and specifying the wrong one produces avoidable problems.

Below is the comparison we use at the EcoGrit trade counter.

WOCA Master Oil

Chemistry: a blend of vegetable oils (primarily soybean and sunflower) with added metallic driers. Cures oxidatively, similar in principle to traditional tung oil but with modern drier technology.

Character: soft feel underfoot, tactile timber surface, slight sheen lift. Colour-enhancing; brings out the natural timber grain without adding a visible film layer.

Best for:

  • Residential living spaces aiming for a natural, matte, tactile feel
  • Oak, Ash, European hardwoods where the goal is to preserve raw character
  • Budget-conscious jobs (materials cost typically 20% less than Diamond Oil Active)
  • Whitewash / limewash styles (White, Natural, Smoke tones in the range)

Not ideal for:

  • High-traffic commercial
  • Entryways exposed to grit / outdoor soil
  • Kitchens where frequent water-spill is likely

Recoat cycle: full refresh every 3-5 years depending on traffic.

WOCA Diamond Oil Active

Chemistry: modified UV-stable resin blend with ceramic nano-particle reinforcement. The "Active" designation refers to UV-light-driven polymerisation components that increase hardness beyond traditional oxidative cure.

Character: noticeably harder-wearing than Master Oil, slightly higher sheen, still matte but with a subtle depth. Marginally darker colour lift.

Best for:

  • Residential with heavy traffic (kids, pets, entryways)
  • Light commercial (boutique retail, design studios, offices with timber-heel traffic)
  • Kitchens and dining rooms
  • Hard Australian species (Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Jarrah) where extra durability is needed

Not ideal for:

  • Full-on hospitality (specify Berger AquaSeal 2K PU or Pafuki for cafes / restaurants)
  • Very dry climates where the higher sheen may read as artificial

Recoat cycle: full refresh every 5-7 years.

Decision matrix

Scenario Specify
Residential oak, matte natural look Master Oil
Residential Blackbutt / Spotted Gum, everyday family Diamond Oil Active
Commercial office / boutique Diamond Oil Active
Limewash / whitewash aesthetic Master Oil (White) then Diamond Oil Active Pure as topcoat
Kitchens and dining Diamond Oil Active
Engineered oak flooring, 6 mm wear layer Master Oil (gentler on thin veneers)
Heritage restoration, budget-conscious Master Oil

Application (ATFA-aligned process)

Both products follow the same procedural framework, consistent with ATFA Code of Practice for Coating of Timber Floors:

  1. Verify timber moisture content within AS 1080.1 targets (10-14% for Australian hardwood)
  2. Sand progression to final 120 grit. No finer.
  3. Vacuum with HEPA-filtered extraction. Tack rag.
  4. Optional: apply WOCA Pre-Base Oil as a colour-unifier or pore conditioner (recommended for Jarrah, Ironbark, heavily variegated packs)
  5. Apply Master Oil or Diamond Oil Active with white pad on a buffer. Coverage 20-30 m²/L.
  6. Buff within 15 minutes of application using a cotton cloth or white pad.
  7. Second coat optional for Diamond Oil Active (Master Oil is single coat).

Cure schedule (at 20 C, 50% RH):

  • Foot traffic: 12-24 hours
  • Light furniture: 48 hours
  • Full cure: 7-14 days depending on product and humidity

Can you mix them?

Yes, and sometimes it is the right call. A common EcoGrit specification is:

  • Coat 1: Master Oil in White for colour and base penetration
  • Coat 2: Diamond Oil Active in Pure for durability topcoat

This layered approach delivers whitewash aesthetic with commercial-grade wear resistance. Verify compatibility on a test offcut first: some colour shifts can occur in the transition layer.

Maintenance

Both products use the WOCA Maintenance Paste and WOCA Natural Soap regime:

  • Daily: dry sweep or vacuum
  • Weekly: damp-mop with WOCA Natural Soap diluted 1:40
  • Quarterly (high traffic) or annually (low traffic): apply WOCA Maintenance Paste with a buffer

Avoid:

  • Generic hardwood cleaners (most strip the surface maintenance paste)
  • Steam mops (drive moisture into the timber and degrade oil)
  • Vinegar-based cleaners (acid etches the cure)

Our recommendation for Australian floors

For most Australian residential jobs, Diamond Oil Active is the safer specification. Our timber is hard, our family life is physical, and a slightly more durable finish saves an unnecessary early re-coat.

Master Oil remains the right call for heritage oak, whitewash limewash specifications, and engineered flooring where a thinner bite into the wear layer is valuable.
