What is the difference between 1K and 2K water-based polyurethane?
1K (single-component) polyurethane is ready to use straight from the tin and ideal for residential floors with moderate traffic. 2K (two-component) polyurethane requires mixing with a hardener before application, creating a harder, more chemical-resistant film better suited to high-traffic commercial environments and kitchens.
Are EcoGrit products low-VOC and safe to use indoors?
Yes. The majority of our finishes are water-based with low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) content, making them safer for indoor use and better for the environment compared to traditional solvent-based coatings. Always check the specific product technical data sheet for detailed VOC information.
Can I use EcoGrit products on bamboo and engineered timber floors?
Yes, many of our products are suitable for engineered timber and bamboo flooring. However, compatibility depends on the specific product and floor type. Check the product datasheet or contact us for advice on the best finish for your particular flooring material.

Application & Technical
How many coats of polyurethane do I need for a timber floor?
For most residential timber floors, we recommend 1 coat of sealer followed by 2-3 coats of polyurethane lacquer. High-traffic areas or commercial spaces may benefit from an additional coat. Always follow the specific product application guide for coat recommendations, dry times, and recoat windows.
What is the best finish for high-traffic commercial floors?
For high-traffic commercial environments, we recommend a 2K water-based polyurethane system such as Berger-Seidle Aqua-Seal 2K PU or similar two-component finishes. These provide superior abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, and longevity compared to single-component alternatives.
How do I maintain a timber floor finished with hardwax oil?
Hardwax oil floors are maintained differently to lacquered floors. Regular cleaning with a manufacturer-recommended maintenance product keeps the floor looking great. Spot repairs are easy — lightly sand the affected area and reapply oil. A full maintenance coat is typically needed every 1-3 years depending on traffic.
What preparation is needed before applying a timber floor finish?
Proper preparation is essential for a quality result. Sand the floor through progressive grits (typically 40, 60, 80, 100, 120), vacuum thoroughly, and tack-clean to remove all dust. Ensure the room temperature is between 15-25°C and humidity is 40-70%. Apply a compatible sealer before your topcoat. Always refer to the specific product instructions for detailed prep requirements.
Oil finish vs polyurethane — which should I choose?
Oil finishes penetrate the timber and enhance the natural grain, giving a matte, natural look. They are easy to spot-repair but need more regular maintenance. Polyurethane lacquers form a protective film on top of the timber, offering higher durability and gloss options with less maintenance. The best choice depends on the look you want and the level of traffic the floor will receive.
