A timber floor sealer or primer is the first coat of a lacquer system. It goes onto freshly sanded, bare timber and prepares it for the topcoat, but it is not the wearing surface. Most lacquer jobs start with one, because a primer can reduce edge bonding, block compounds in the wood and give the topcoat an even base. That matters on Australian floors: tannin-rich species such as spotted gum benefit from a sealer coat of ExoBloc or Uniquick Primer before the main finish. All four products here are made by Berger-Seidle for the base of a lacquer system.

How to choose a timber floor sealer or primer

  • AquaSeal FlexPrimer: the standard water-based primer under AquaSeal finishes. It reduces edge bonding and gives a neutral colour with medium grain enhancement. Its listed compatible topcoats are SmartHome, EcoGold, NordicWhite, CeramicStar, SmartStar and NaturalWhite, and it is the recommended first coat under 2KPU RoyalMat and NaturalWhite.
  • AquaSeal ExoBloc: a 1-component water-based sealer with intense grain enhancement and a high blocking effect against wood ingredients, suited to most exotic species and to stained floors. Berger-Seidle's recommended GreenStar build is one coat of ExoBloc followed by two coats of GreenStar.
  • ExoBloc Turbo: when sealing over Classic ExpressStain, mix 1 part Turbo into 10 parts ExoBloc, and the ExoBloc can then go on 2 hours after the stain.
  • Uniquick Primer: an alcohol-based (SolvSeal) sealer, not a water-based one. It strongly isolates wood ingredients and can be used under almost all Berger-Seidle water- and solvent-based finishes.
  • Then choose the topcoat: a sealer always needs one. Pick 2K water-based polyurethane for high-traffic and commercial floors, or 1K water-based polyurethane if you would rather not mix a hardener.

Before You Roll the First Coat

Most first-coat problems start before the tin is opened. Sand back to bare timber, remove every trace of sanding dust and ventilate the room well, because limited ventilation, low temperatures and thick coats all delay drying.

Roll FlexPrimer on evenly, particularly on porous or absorbent species; on tight-grained timber it can also be trowelled across the boards. Roll ExoBloc on uniformly and richly, and do not sand it once dry: it dries glossy, and sanding risks cutting through to the timber and changing the colour. Apply one sealer coat only, and allow FlexPrimer about 1 hour to dry before the topcoat.

Is a floor sealer enough on its own, or do I need a topcoat?

You need a topcoat. The sealers and primers on this page are base coats made to go under a lacquer; FlexPrimer, for example, is applied before AquaSeal finishes. Resistance to wear and spills comes from the topcoat over it. Berger-Seidle's GreenStar data sheet gives a full build as two coats of finish over one primer coat.

Do I always need a primer before lacquering a timber floor?

Most lacquer jobs start with one. A primer or sealer reduces edge bonding (FlexPrimer) or blocks wood ingredients (ExoBloc, Uniquick) and gives the topcoat an even base. NordicWhite can be used as its own sealer, although a sealer is still recommended. 2KPU RoyalMat and NaturalWhite have FlexPrimer as the recommended first coat, and GreenStar goes on as one sealer coat plus 2 topcoats. Check the topcoat's data sheet before you skip the primer.

How long should a primer dry before the topcoat goes on?

FlexPrimer can be topcoated after 1 hour at 23°C and 50% humidity, and ExoBloc after 1 to 2 hours in normal conditions. Apply one sealer coat only, and do not cut it back before the topcoat. Limited ventilation, low temperatures or thick coats slow drying considerably. Over Classic ExpressStain, ExoBloc mixed with ExoBloc Turbo can go on after 2 hours.

Which sealer suits tannin-rich timber such as spotted gum?

Choose one with a strong blocking effect. AquaSeal ExoBloc (water-based) has a high blocking effect against wood ingredients, and Uniquick Primer (alcohol-based) strongly isolates them. FlexPrimer's stated job is reducing edge bonding. ExoBloc and Uniquick Primer both suit tannin-rich timber, but boards vary, so trial your full sealer and topcoat system on an offcut first, or call our technical line on 0401 270 818.

Can I use these sealers under an oil or hardwax oil finish?

Not as a rule. The primers and sealers on this page are made as base coats for lacquer finishes such as AquaSeal. Oils are designed to penetrate the timber, and oil systems have their own pre-treatments: Rubio Monocoat Tannin Primer, for example, goes on before Oil Plus 2C to prevent discolouration on high-tannin species. Follow the oil manufacturer's preparation steps, or call us before mixing systems.
