Wood floor filler closes the gaps and open joints that would otherwise trap dirt and show through a new finish. On a sanding job it goes in after the coarse sanding and before the final fine sand, so the filled joints finish flush with the boards. This collection holds the Berger-Seidle AquaSeal fillers we stock for timber and parquet floors: water-based Pafuki, pre-coloured PafukiPowder, permanently elastic PAK-Stop and acrylic FlexFill, plus a hard wax repair kit for finished floors. They suit floor sanders and serious DIY renovators, and the right choice comes down to two questions: how wide are the gaps, and will the boards keep moving?

How to choose a wood floor filler

  • Hairline gaps up to 2 mm: AquaSeal Pafuki is a water-based, solvent-free filler solution mixed with fine sanding dust from the floor itself, ideally from 80 grit, for a close colour match. Spread it quickly and evenly over the floor with a trowel and sand once fully dry, under normal conditions after about 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Pre-coloured, no sanding dust: AquaSeal PafukiPowder comes in seven shades, including white and black, and is mixed with water, not sanding dust. It is typically ready to sand in 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Wide joints and movement gaps: AquaSeal PAK-Stop is a permanently high-elastic trowel filler, coloured and hardened by mixing in PafukiPowder. The PAK-Stop and PafukiPowder kit is pre-measured at a 30% mix ratio. Allow a minimum of 16 hours before sanding.
  • Edge gaps and individual joints: AquaSeal FlexFill is an elastic, silicone-free acrylic filler in a 310 ml cartridge, sold in ready-to-use colours for gaps in the floor surface and edge areas. The FlexFill Systainer set includes a systainer case with an insert for 18 cartridges, a cartridge press and a spray bottle, supplied without cartridges.
  • Chips and scratches in a finished floor: the Premium Wood Repair Kit uses melted hard wax sticks in assorted shades for spot repairs to chips, scratches, pressure marks and small holes on lacquered floors.

Board movement matters. Our Baltic pine flooring guide notes that gaps develop between boards with seasonal movement and recommends flexible fillers over rigid putty. The floor sanding grit guide sets out a grit sequence for Australian hardwood floors, from the first coarse pass to the final screen.

Once the filler is sanded back, the floor is ready for primer and finish from our timber floor lacquer range. EcoGrit ships Australia-wide from Knoxfield, Melbourne, with trade pricing for flooring professionals. Not sure which filler suits your gaps? Call our technical line on 0401 270 818.

Filling Mistakes That Show Up After Coating

Filling Mistakes That Show Up After Coating

Many filler problems start with preparation. Remove old filler from the joints and clean out any wax contamination before you start. If you are using PafukiPowder, close large joints with timber pieces first rather than trying to fill them.

Mix PafukiPowder to the right consistency: too watery and it settles into the gaps, too thick and the sander tears it out. Keep Pafuki to joints up to 2 mm and switch to PAK-Stop for anything wider. FlexFill is for small gaps and small areas. PAK-Stop can shrink in very large joints as it dries, so check them the next morning and apply a second coat if needed. Never sand until the filler is fully dry.

Questions about our Wood Floor Filler for Gaps & Joints?

Which filler should I use for gaps in a timber floor?

Choose by gap width and movement. For hairline gaps and joints up to 2 mm, mix AquaSeal Pafuki with fine sanding dust. For a pre-coloured filler that needs no sanding dust, use PafukiPowder mixed with water. For wide joints and movement gaps, use permanently elastic PAK-Stop coloured with PafukiPowder. For individual gaps in the surface or edge areas, use FlexFill from a cartridge.

What can I use instead of AquaSeal PAK-Stop?

It depends on the gap. For joints up to 2 mm, AquaSeal Pafuki mixed with fine sanding dust can be sanded after about 30 to 45 minutes, against a minimum of 16 hours for PAK-Stop. For individual gaps in the surface and edge areas, FlexFill is an elastic acrylic filler applied from a cartridge. For wide joints and movement gaps across the whole floor, the FlexFill instructions recommend PAK-Stop itself.

When should wood filler be applied during floor sanding?

Fill after the coarse sanding and before the final fine sand. Remove any old filler from the joints first. For Pafuki, collect fine dust, ideally from the 80 grit pass. Trowel Pafuki, PafukiPowder or PAK-Stop over the whole floor, let it dry fully, then sand back to bare timber before you prime or coat.

Will timber floor filler crack or shrink over time?

Match the filler to the joint. Pafuki is designed for hairline gaps and small joints up to 2 mm. Where joints are wide or boards keep moving, use PAK-Stop, which stays permanently elastic. FlexFill, which is elastic with very low shrinkage, suits small gaps and small areas. PAK-Stop can shrink in very large joints as it dries, so a second coat after overnight drying may be needed.

Can I lacquer or oil over wood floor filler?

Once the filler is dry and sanded back, yes, within each product's limits. Pafuki is designed as preparation before lacquer or oil finishes, PafukiPowder can be recoated with any Berger-Seidle finish, FlexFill can be combined with all standard parquet finishes, and PAK-Stop is coated with an AquaSeal finish. If you plan to stain, test filler and stain together on a sanded offcut first.
