Rubio Monocoat is a Belgian range of wood oils, exterior finishes and care products built around single-layer application, where the oil bonds with the top fibres of the timber. EcoGrit stocks the interior and exterior systems for flooring contractors, joiners and DIY renovators across Australia. Inside, Oil Plus 2C is the core product: a 0% VOC hardwax oil made from linseed oil that colours and protects floors and furniture, in more than 40 colours. Outside, DuroGrit, Hybrid Wood Protector and WoodCream cover exterior timber. Oil Plus 2C is for interior use only and must go onto raw timber or a Rubio pre-treatment, never over an existing stain or finish, so sand back to bare wood first and test your colour on an offcut of the same boards.

How to choose a Rubio Monocoat product

  • Interior floors and furniture: Oil Plus 2C, a two-component oil: Part A carries the oil and colour, and Part B accelerates curing from about 21 days to 7 days (touch dry within 36 hours). Test colours first with the Oil Plus Sample Set.
  • Setting the base colour: Precolor Easy, a water-based pre-colour in 14 mixable colours, and Pre-Aging, a non-reactive pre-treatment in 10 shades from light to darker smoked looks, go on before Oil Plus 2C. Both are finished with Oil Plus 2C for protection.
  • Preparing interior timber: Raw Wood Cleaner removes fine dust after sanding and vacuuming, WoodPrep opens the grain for more even colour, and Tannin Primer helps prevent tannin bleed on oak, chestnut and walnut before Oil Plus 2C.
  • Decks and outdoor timber: DuroGrit (16 colours) and Hybrid Wood Protector are one-layer, 0% VOC exterior monocoats with built-in UV protection. For decks and other horizontal surfaces, Rubio's instructions add an accelerator to Hybrid Wood Protector, so ask our technical line which one before you order. Rubio Monocoat products are designed to work as a system, so follow the steps in order and stay within the range.

Inside, sand and vacuum, use a pre-treatment such as Precolor Easy or Tannin Primer if the job needs one, then apply one layer of Oil Plus 2C following the product instructions. Rubio notes that very absorbent timber such as pine or walnut may need a second application. Clean the finished floor with Universal Soap and refresh it with Universal Maintenance Oil.

Outside, clean the timber with Exterior Wood Cleaner, then apply DuroGrit (on timber sanded to 80 grit, with any old finish fully removed) or Hybrid Wood Protector in one layer, or use WoodCream on vertical boards. Maintain DuroGrit and Hybrid Wood Protector finishes with Exterior Soap.

What is Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C?

Oil Plus 2C is a 0% VOC hardwax oil, made from linseed oil, that colours and protects interior timber such as floors and furniture in one layer. Part A carries the oil and colour, and Part B accelerates curing from about 21 days to 7 days (touch dry within 36 hours). Rubio lists it for interior use only; for exterior timber use DuroGrit, Hybrid Wood Protector or WoodCream.

How many coats of Rubio Monocoat do I need?

Oil Plus 2C is a one-layer product, although Rubio notes that very absorbent timber such as pine or walnut may need a second application. If the job uses a pre-treatment such as Precolor Easy, Pre-Aging or Tannin Primer, apply that first, then Oil Plus 2C. DuroGrit and Hybrid Wood Protector are also one-layer exterior products.

Can I use Oil Plus 2C over an existing floor finish?

No. Rubio states that Oil Plus 2C must be applied to raw wood or over a Rubio Monocoat pre-treatment, not over an existing stain or finish. Sand off any old oil, wax or lacquer back to bare wood first. It suits raw or freshly sanded interior floors and furniture, not decks or cladding.

Can I use Rubio Monocoat outdoors on decks and cladding?

Yes, with the exterior products, not Oil Plus 2C. DuroGrit and Hybrid Wood Protector are one-layer exterior monocoats for decks, outdoor furniture and other exterior timber, and Rubio's instructions add an accelerator to Hybrid Wood Protector on horizontal surfaces. WoodCream is for vertical timber such as cladding. Clean first with Exterior Wood Cleaner and maintain DuroGrit and Hybrid Wood Protector with Exterior Soap.
