This range brings together penetrating oils, one-layer monocoats, a water-based cream for vertical boards and a colourless shield for timber you want to leave grey, from WOCA and Rubio Monocoat. It suits builders, cladding installers and flooring contractors as well as homeowners caring for cladding, fences, pergolas, doors and outdoor furniture. The right product depends on the look you want, which way the boards run and how much maintenance you plan to do.

How to choose an exterior timber finish

  • Penetrating oil. WOCA Exterior Wood Oil is a plant-based, water-carried oil with built-in UV protection, and it protects without peeling or flaking. It suits decks, pergolas, fencing, outdoor furniture, doors and shutters. On untreated or highly absorbent softwoods such as pine or larch, apply WOCA Exterior Wood Primer first.
  • One-layer monocoat. Rubio Hybrid Wood Protector (integrated UV stabiliser) and Rubio DuroGrit (integrated colour pigments, 16 colours) colour and protect exterior wood in a single layer, with 0% VOC. DuroGrit is a single-component finish. On horizontal surfaces such as decks and outdoor furniture, Rubio's instructions call for 10% Accelerator mixed into Hybrid Wood Protector.
  • Vertical boards. Rubio WoodCream is a water-based cream that gives cladding, fences and screens a weathered look, in 27 colours.
  • Keep the grey. WOCA Exterior Wood Shield is a colourless, water-based treatment that helps untreated timber resist water and dirt without changing its aged patina.
  • Clean before you coat. Rubio Exterior Wood Cleaner removes grey discolouration, green deposits and dirt before a Rubio exterior finish, and WOCA Exterior Wood Cleaner removes dirt, mould and green growth before WOCA oil.
  • Test the colour. Timber species change how a colour reads, so try the WOCA 25 ml sample pack or a small Rubio size on your own timber first.

Planning Quantities for an Exterior Job

Buying the right quantity starts with measuring the area and checking the coverage of each product. The product data gives 8 to 12 m² per litre for Exterior Wood Oil, 10 to 15 m² per litre for Exterior Wood Shield and 8 to 15 m² per litre for Exterior Wood Primer. Coverage depends on the species and how absorbent the timber is, so allow some margin and test a sample first.

WOCA Exterior Wood Oil comes in 750 ml, 2.5 litre and 20 litre sizes, with the 20 litre size intended for professional use. For orders over 25 kg, EcoGrit quotes the actual freight to your address and confirms it with you before dispatch.

Which exterior finish suits timber cladding, fences and screens?

Rubio WoodCream is made for vertical exterior timber such as cladding, fences and screens, and gives a weathered look in 27 colours. Rubio Hybrid Wood Protector and DuroGrit colour and protect exterior wood, including cladding, in a single layer. WOCA Exterior Wood Oil suits fencing, pergolas, doors and shutters. Choose by colour, look and how you plan to maintain the surface.

Do exterior timber oils protect against UV and greying?

Several in this range do. WOCA Exterior Wood Oil has built-in UV protection to reduce sun damage and greying, Rubio Hybrid Wood Protector has an integrated UV stabiliser, and DuroGrit combines UV protection with integrated colour pigments. Timber in full sun still needs attention sooner than shaded boards, so check the most exposed areas first.

Can I keep the natural grey, weathered look on outdoor timber?

Yes. WOCA Exterior Wood Shield is a colourless, water-based treatment for untreated timber that resists water, dirt and weather without changing its aged patina. It suits garden furniture, pergolas and fences, and also absorbent outdoor tiles, concrete and stone. For vertical boards, Rubio WoodCream gives a weathered look and includes a range of grey colours.

Do I need a primer on pine or other softwood outdoor timber?

With WOCA Exterior Wood Oil, use WOCA Exterior Wood Primer first on untreated or highly absorbent softwoods such as pine, larch or spruce, and on older pressure-treated timber. It improves the oil's adhesion and durability. Clean the timber, let it dry, apply the primer undiluted, then finish with Exterior Wood Oil within 14 days. It is not for red cedar or pressure-treated hardwood.

How do I maintain outdoor timber once it has been finished?

Keep it clean and follow the maintenance routine for the finish you used. Rubio Exterior Soap, also sold as a ready-to-use Ecospray, cleans and maintains exterior wood finished with Hybrid Wood Protector or DuroGrit. WoodCream Softener is also made for maintaining WoodCream-treated surfaces. For WOCA Exterior Wood Oil, the instructions advise regular maintenance to get the most from its UV protection.
