Questions about our Subfloor Preparation?

What is acoustic underlay and why do I need it?

Acoustic underlay is a rubber mat installed beneath timber, tile, or vinyl flooring to reduce impact noise transmission between levels. In Australia, the Building Code (BCA/NCC) requires minimum acoustic performance in multi-storey residential buildings. Products like Damtec and AcoustaMat recycled rubber underlays meet or exceed these requirements while also providing cushioning and moisture protection.

What thickness acoustic underlay do I need?

The required thickness depends on your building type and flooring method. For direct-stick timber over concrete, 3-4mm underlays like Damtec Multi are typical. For floating floors or higher acoustic requirements, 5-10mm options are available. AcoustaMat comes in 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, and 10mm thicknesses in both rolls and 1m x 1m tiles.

What is the difference between Damtec and AcoustaMat?

Damtec is German-engineered with a density of approximately 970 kg/m3, offering premium acoustic performance. AcoustaMat is Australian-made from 100% recycled rubber, CSIRO tested and BCA compliant, and offers a more cost-effective solution. Both are excellent choices for timber flooring acoustic compliance.

Do I still need self-levelling compound with acoustic underlay?

It depends on the condition of your subfloor. If the concrete substrate is uneven (more than 3mm variation per metre), you should level it with a product like Mapei Ultraplan Renovation before installing acoustic underlay. The underlay sits on the levelled surface, then your finished floor goes on top.

Can I use acoustic underlay with underfloor heating?

Yes. Both Damtec and AcoustaMat rubber underlays are compatible with hydronic underfloor heating systems. The rubber material conducts heat effectively while still providing acoustic insulation. Always ensure the heating system is commissioned and tested before installing the underlay and finished floor.
