What is the difference between A2 304 and A4 316 stainless steel screws?

A2 304 stainless steel offers good corrosion resistance for inland and sheltered environments. A4 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, giving it superior resistance to salt spray and coastal conditions. For projects within 5km of the coast or in high-moisture areas, choose A4 316. SPAX offers both grades across their decking range. All Anchormark screws are A4 316 marine-grade.

What is the SPAX 4CUT point and why does it matter?

The SPAX 4CUT point is a patented screw tip with four cutting edges that removes material as it enters the timber. This reduces splitting force by up to 40% compared to standard screw points. You get cleaner entry, less pre-drilling, and faster installation in both hardwood and softwood. It is a key reason SPAX screws are preferred by professional installers.

Do I need to pre-drill when using these screws?

SPAX screws with the 4CUT point rarely need pre-drilling in softwood. For hardwood decking like Spotted Gum or Merbau, pre-drilling is recommended to prevent splitting and reduce drive torque. Anchormark screws with the S2 drive also perform well without pre-drilling in most softwoods. Always pre-drill within 20mm of board ends regardless of screw type.

What screw length do I need for my decking project?

The general rule is 2.5 times the thickness of the board you are fastening. For standard 19mm decking boards, use 50mm screws. For 32mm hardwood decking, use 65mm or 70mm screws. SPAX and Anchormark both offer multiple lengths in each range so you get the right penetration into your joists without over-driving.

How many screws do I need per square metre of decking?

For standard 90mm wide decking boards with joists at 450mm centres, plan for approximately 22 screws per square metre (2 screws per board per joist). Box sizes vary by product. Check the pack quantity listed on each product page to estimate how many boxes you need for your total area.
