Best Decking Oil in Australia: How to Choose, Apply & Maintain Your Timber Deck
Choosing the right decking oil is one of the most important decisions you will make for your outdoor timber. The wrong product leads to peeling, greying, mould growth, and costly re-sanding. The right one protects against UV damage, moisture, and foot traffic while enhancing the natural beauty of your timber species.
This guide covers everything you need to know about decking oil in Australia — from choosing the right product for your timber species to application technique, drying times, and long-term maintenance.
What Is Decking Oil and How Does It Work?
Decking oil is a penetrating finish that soaks into the timber rather than forming a film on the surface. Unlike paint or varnish, oil works from within the timber cells to repel water, resist UV degradation, and prevent the grey weathering that untreated decks develop within months.
Because oil penetrates rather than sits on the surface, it does not peel, crack, or flake like film-forming coatings. When it wears, the deck simply looks drier rather than damaged — and maintenance is as simple as cleaning and applying a fresh coat.
Types of Decking Oil
Natural Plant-Based Oils
Made from plant oils like linseed, tung, and sunflower, these products are low-VOC and environmentally friendly. WOCA Exterior Wood Oil is a plant-based option that provides deep penetration and natural UV protection. Plant-based oils tend to nourish the timber better but may require more frequent reapplication in harsh Australian conditions.
Modified Natural Oils
These combine natural oils with resins and UV stabilisers for improved durability and longer maintenance intervals. They offer the best balance of natural appearance and performance for most Australian decking applications.
Synthetic Decking Oils
Formulated with synthetic resins for maximum durability and UV resistance. These products typically last longest between maintenance coats but may not penetrate as deeply into dense hardwoods.
Choosing Decking Oil by Timber Species
Merbau Decking Oil
Merbau is one of Australia's most popular decking timbers, but its high tannin content creates unique challenges. Fresh merbau bleeds dark red-brown tannins when exposed to rain, staining surrounding surfaces. Allow merbau to weather for 2 to 4 weeks before applying the first coat of oil — this lets the initial tannin bleed subside.
Use an exterior oil specifically rated for high-tannin hardwoods. Avoid light-coloured oils on merbau as tannin bleed can discolour them.
Spotted Gum Decking Oil
Spotted gum is extremely dense (Janka hardness 11.0) which means oil penetrates slowly. Apply thin coats and allow longer absorption time between coats. Two thin coats outperform one thick coat on spotted gum every time.
Blackbutt Decking Oil
Blackbutt is moderately dense and accepts oil well. It responds to most quality decking oils without special preparation. A standard exterior oil with UV protection is sufficient for blackbutt decks.
Treated Pine Decking Oil
Treated pine must be allowed to dry for 4 to 6 weeks after installation before oiling, as the treatment chemicals need time to stabilise. Use an oil specifically formulated for softwoods — these penetrate deeper into the more porous timber structure.
How to Apply Decking Oil
Preparation
- Clean the deck thoroughly — remove all dirt, mould, and debris. A dedicated deck cleaner or oxygen bleach solution works well. Pressure washing is effective but keep the nozzle at least 300mm from the surface to avoid damaging the timber grain.
- Sand if necessary — if the existing finish is flaking or there is a heavy build-up from a previous film-forming product, sand back to bare timber. If the previous oil has simply worn away, sanding is usually not required.
- Check moisture — timber should be dry to the touch with a moisture reading below 18%. Do not apply oil to damp timber or if rain is expected within 24 hours.
Application
- Stir the oil thoroughly before and during application — do not shake.
- Apply with a lambswool applicator, quality brush, or roller designed for decking oil. Work in the direction of the grain.
- Apply thin, even coats. On dense hardwoods, wipe off any excess oil that has not absorbed after 15 to 20 minutes — pooled oil becomes sticky and attracts dirt.
- Allow the first coat to dry according to the product instructions (typically 6 to 12 hours) before applying the second coat.
- Most decks require 2 coats. New timber or very dry timber may benefit from a third coat.
Drying and Curing
Most decking oils are touch-dry within 6 to 12 hours and can handle light foot traffic after 24 hours. Full cure typically takes 3 to 7 days depending on temperature, humidity, and the specific product. Avoid placing furniture or pots on the deck until fully cured.
Decking Oil Maintenance Schedule
How often you need to re-oil depends on your deck's exposure:
| Exposure | Re-oil Frequency |
|---|---|
| North-facing, full sun | Every 6 to 12 months |
| Partial shade, covered areas | Every 12 to 18 months |
| Pool surrounds | Every 6 to 12 months |
| Shaded, protected areas | Every 18 to 24 months |
The simplest test: splash water on the deck. If it beads up, the oil is still working. If it soaks in quickly, it is time to re-oil.
Common Decking Oil Mistakes
- Applying too thick — excess oil that does not penetrate becomes a sticky, dirt-attracting film. Always wipe off excess.
- Oiling damp timber — moisture in the timber prevents oil penetration and causes milky discolouration.
- Skipping the clean — oiling over dirt, mould, or grey weathered timber locks contamination under the oil. Always clean and brighten first.
- Applying in direct sun — hot timber causes oil to dry too fast on the surface before penetrating. Apply in the early morning or late afternoon.
- Using interior oil on exterior timber — interior oils lack UV stabilisers and weather resistance. Always use a product specifically rated for exterior use.
