What is the difference between 1K and 2K water-based polyurethane?

A 1K (single component) water-based polyurethane like AquaSeal SmartStar is ready to use straight from the tin. It cures by water evaporation and is ideal for residential floors with moderate traffic. A 2K (two component) system like AquaSeal 2KPU RoyalMat requires mixing with a hardener before application. The crosslinking reaction creates a harder, more chemical-resistant film. 2K systems are the better choice for commercial spaces, kitchens, and high-traffic areas.

Do I need a primer before applying AquaSeal topcoat?

Yes. Apply one coat of Berger-Seidle AquaSeal Pafuki or AquaSeal PAKstop as a sealer coat before your topcoat. The primer seals the timber, reduces grain raise, and improves adhesion of subsequent coats. It also helps prevent tannin bleed on species like oak and spotted gum. Sand lightly between primer and topcoat with 150-180 grit.

How many coats of AquaSeal topcoat do I need?

Apply a minimum of two coats of topcoat over your sealed floor. For high-traffic commercial areas, three coats are recommended. Allow 2-4 hours drying time between coats depending on temperature and humidity. Light sand with 180-220 grit between coats for best adhesion. The floor is ready for light foot traffic after 24 hours and full cure takes 7-14 days.
