1K vs 2K polyurethane: the hardener question, solved
Pick up any premium water-based polyurethane and the conversation immediately splits into two camps: 1K and 2K. 1K comes in one bottle. 2K comes in two bottles - a base resin plus a small bottle of hardener you stir in before application. The difference is not marketing. It is a real chemical difference in how the film cross-links, and it changes the coating's final hardness, chemical resistance, and usable pot life.
The ATFA Code of Practice for Coating of Timber Floors recognises both systems and specifies each for different commercial and residential wear classes. AS/NZS 4858 certifies both families but 2K systems typically hold the higher DIN EN 12720 chemical resistance classes. Here is the plain-English version of why that matters.
How 1K cures
1K water-based polyurethanes are moisture-cure. The polyurethane dispersion contains latent reactive groups that cross-link with airborne moisture and with trace isocyanate additives after the water has evaporated. You get a good film. You get reasonable hardness. You get indefinite shelf life in the bottle.
What you do NOT get:
- Maximum film density
- Full chemical resistance to red wine, olive oil, vinegar, urine
- Heat resistance beyond ~80 C
1K is typically rated for residential use, light commercial at a push.
How 2K cures
2K systems separate the polyurethane dispersion (the "A" component) from an aliphatic polyisocyanate hardener (the "B" component). When you combine them, the isocyanate groups react directly with hydroxyl groups on the polymer backbone to form dense urethane cross-links within the film.
The result is a coating with:
- ~20-30% higher abrasion resistance (Taber test)
- Full resistance to red wine, coffee, oil, wine vinegar for the lifetime of the film
- Heat resistance to ~120 C (no white ring from a hot coffee cup)
- Higher film clarity with less blueing
The trade-off is a pot life of 2 hours. Once you mix A and B, the clock starts. At the 2-hour mark, the product in your tray begins to thicken and its film-forming properties degrade. Anything unused goes to waste.
When 2K is worth it
Always specify 2K when:
- Commercial floor. Cafes, restaurants, offices, retail. Non-negotiable.
- Kitchens and bathrooms. Residential kitchens cop more wine, oil and water than half the cafes in Melbourne.
- Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Jarrah, Ironbark. Tannin will lift through a 1K primer in under a week. 2K systems sit denser and block more reliably.
- Under-floor heating. 1K films can check over hydronic heating coils because cure-depth is less uniform.
1K is fine for:
- Low-traffic residential hallways and bedrooms
- Investment properties where the spec says "good enough for 5 years"
- DIY jobs where the operator cannot commit to a 2-hour pot-life window
The hidden risk nobody talks about
Mix 2K wrong and you get a soft, sticky film that never fully cures.
The most common failures we see:
- Under-dosed hardener. Skip reading the label, eyeball "about right", end up with 6% hardener when the spec calls for 10%. Film never cross-links fully.
- Contaminated stir. The hardener (B component) reacts with moisture in wet mixing sticks. Always use a clean dry stick.
- Old B. Once a 2K B bottle is opened, it has a 4-6 week usable life. The isocyanate reacts slowly with humidity in the air inside the half-empty bottle. Old B = under-cured film.
If you are only using 2K once a month, buy the smallest pack. A half-used hardener bottle is a half-wasted bottle.

Pro tips from the Knoxfield team
- Weigh, do not eyeball. Hardener is dosed by weight, not volume. Kitchen scales cost $12.
- Pour A into B, not the other way. Less glugging, better mix.
- Wait 10 minutes after mixing before you pour into the tray. That induction period lets the reaction stabilise and gives a smoother lay-off.
- If you lose the pot-life window, pour the tray into a sealed waste container. Never back into the bucket.
