Decking oils tested: which finishes survive an Australian summer

Decking oils tested: which finishes survive an Australian summer

Exterior timber protection in Australia is a different problem to exterior timber protection in Europe. Our UV is rated at 12-14 on the UV index in summer versus 6-8 across Northern Europe. Our temperature swings are greater. Our humidity is either desert-dry or subtropical-wet. A decking oil that carries German or Belgian certifications and lasts 5 years in Cologne may need recoating at 18 months in Brisbane.

EcoGrit stocks four decking oil systems. We have tested all four across Melbourne winters and summers. Here is the real-world performance summary.

The test parameters

All four products applied in March 2023 to new spotted gum decking on two adjacent decks at our Knoxfield trade showroom. One deck north-facing, one south-facing. Both decks identical timber batch, identical preparation (80-grit sand, vacuum, ready for first coat).

Assessment: UV fade (visual), grain raising (tactile), water repellency (bead test), surface integrity (film check), need for recoat (maintenance intervention).

Cutek Extreme

What it is: Australian-formulated penetrating oil with colourtone options. Oleophilic (oil-loving) resin in a paraffinic solvent carrier. Designed for Australian eucalypts.

North-facing performance after 12 months: Minor grey-out at the south-west corner, 85% colour retention, water still beading in spring 2024. No mechanical film breakdown.

North-facing performance after 24 months: Noticeable grey-out, 60% colour retention, beading reduced to weak sheeting. Recoat due.

South-facing performance after 24 months: 80% colour retention, strong beading, no recoat needed.

Recoat protocol: Clean with Cutek Proper Prep (no sanding needed if surface still sound), re-apply one coat. Total job under 4 hours for a 20 m² deck.

Our verdict: Best-in-class for Australian spotted gum and iron bark in exposed applications. The Australian formulation matters.

WOCA Exterior Oil

What it is: Vegetable oil base (linseed, soya) with alkyd resin. Penetrating, colour-enhancing, maintenance-light. Danish formulation.

North-facing performance after 12 months: Colour shift to a duller matte, 75% retention. Some end-grain checking appeared.

North-facing performance after 24 months: Significant grey-out, 40% retention. Water beads on 60% of the surface. Recoat needed.

South-facing performance after 24 months: 70% retention. Beading intact. Recoat can wait 6-12 months.

Recoat protocol: Clean, re-apply one to two coats per wear. Can be re-coated without sanding if timber still smooth.

Our verdict: Excellent for shaded decks and semi-protected verandahs. UV performance on fully-exposed decks drops faster than Cutek. Use as a maintenance re-oil on factory-protected decks.

Rubio Hybrid Wood Protector

What it is: Rubio's exterior version of Monocoat, formulated for decking, cladding and exterior structural timber. Belgian, same molecular bonding principle as Oil Plus 2C but with UV-stabilising pigments.

North-facing performance after 12 months: Exceptional colour retention, 90%. Minor sheen drop. No grain raising.

North-facing performance after 24 months: 75% colour retention. Beading still strong. Some localised fade at the joists.

South-facing performance after 24 months: 90% retention. Looks new.

Recoat protocol: Can spot-repair without witness lines (the molecular-bonding advantage). Or light-clean and re-apply to full deck.

Our verdict: The European premium option. Works well in Australia because the pigments are UV-stable and the bonding chemistry prevents film failure even in harsh sun. Price premium over Cutek is ~30%.

Osmo UV-Protection Oil Extra

What it is: German wax-and-oil blend with UV inhibitors. Microporous film that breathes but repels water.

North-facing performance after 12 months: Good colour, 85% retention. Slight sheen from the wax component.

North-facing performance after 24 months: 70% retention. Still beading. Some wax-layer chalking on high-traffic paths.

South-facing performance after 24 months: 85% retention. No issues.

Recoat protocol: Light scuff-sand, recoat. Compatibility with other products limited (wax layer interferes), best to stay with Osmo for subsequent coats.

Our verdict: Solid performer, especially for softer exotic hardwoods where the wax layer adds wear protection. UV performance marginally below Rubio.

Head-to-head summary

Product UV hold (north, 24mo) Spot-repair Recoat cycle Price per m²
Cutek Extreme 60% OK (some witness lines) 18-24 months $4-5
WOCA Exterior 40% Yes 12-18 months $3-4
Rubio Hybrid WP 75% Excellent (molecular) 24-36 months $6-7
Osmo UV-Protection Extra 70% OK 18-24 months $5-6

Prices are indicative retail per m² application; trade pricing reduces 20-30%.

Before you apply any decking oil

  1. Sand or clean to bare timber. Any existing finish must be removed or thoroughly cleaned and keyed.
  2. Verify moisture content under 16%. Applying over wet timber traps moisture and causes peeling.
  3. Check the forecast. 48 hours no rain forecast, ambient 15-30 C, ideally overcast for even cure.
  4. Apply oil immediately after sanding or cleaning. Weathered timber absorbs unevenly; the fresh surface wants oil within 72 hours.
  5. Apply one thin coat, buff, let penetrate, optionally second coat. Thick layers do not cure, they skin over and stay sticky.

North-facing versus south-facing decks

The single biggest variable in deck oil performance is orientation. A north-facing deck in Melbourne receives ~1800 hours of direct sun per year. A south-facing deck receives under 400. The north-facing deck needs UV-premium product; the south-facing deck can run a less UV-robust formula at a lower cost.

If you have a mixed deck (wraps around corner of house), spec the premium product for the whole area. Matching a faded patch to a still-new patch is visually difficult.

Common failures

  • Oil over existing paint. Will not bond. Strip back to bare timber.
  • Oil on powder-coat metal. Permanent stain. Mask before application.
  • Over-applying in hot sun. Oil skins over before it can buff off. Apply in shade or early morning.
  • Using timber furniture oils (Danish oil, linseed) on structural decking. Not UV-rated. Fails in 6-12 months.
  • Skipping the end-grain. End-grain absorbs 4x more oil. Leaving it untreated causes checking and water ingress. Treat ends of every board.

Our recommendation

For new Australian hardwood decking exposed to full sun: Rubio Hybrid Wood Protector if budget allows, Cutek Extreme if not. Both will perform.

For semi-protected decks, pergolas and verandahs: WOCA Exterior is value-for-money.

For decks with existing finishes being maintained: match the incumbent product where possible. Cross-compatibility is limited.
