Oils and stains are the finishes to choose when a timber floor should still look and feel like timber. This collection brings together hardwax oils, wood stains, lyes and pre-colours from Rubio Monocoat, WOCA, Berger-Seidle and Ciranova for flooring contractors and serious DIY sanders. An oil works into the top fibres of the timber rather than sitting on it as a lacquer film, and worn areas can be refreshed with a matching maintenance oil instead of a full re-sand. A stain, lye or pre-colour changes the tone first and needs a compatible oil or lacquer over it for protection. Colour results vary by species, and dense Australian hardwoods such as spotted gum can take colour unevenly, so test on an offcut of the same boards before you commit.

How to choose an oil or stain

  • One-layer colour and protection: Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C, a 0% VOC hardwax oil for interior floors and furniture in more than 40 colours. It goes onto raw timber or a Rubio pre-treatment, never over an existing stain or finish.
  • Hard-wearing oil for busy floors: WOCA Diamond Oil Active, a single-component oil for homes and for commercial floors that need maximum durability, or Ciranova Hardwax Oil Titan, rolled on in at least two coats on hardwoods such as oak, with optional 5% UA Hardener for extra scratch and chemical resistance.
  • Custom-mixed oil colours: Berger-Seidle Classic BaseOil Color, whose colours can be mixed to suit each floor, with Classic Plus hardener added to speed drying. Browse the Berger-Seidle Classic range.
  • Stain under a lacquer (varnish): Berger-Seidle Classic ExpressStain, a fast-drying, solvent-based stain that is also a base for AquaSeal water-based finishes. Choose the topcoat from our lacquer systems.
  • Reactive colour on oak: Ciranova Reactive Stain, WOCA Driftwood Lye and WOCA Antique Oak Lye react with the tannins in oak for aged, weathered or smoked looks, and all need a protective finish over the top.
  • Setting the base tone: WOCA Wood Lye or WOCA Pre-colour under a WOCA oil, or Rubio Precolor Easy and Pre-Aging under Oil Plus 2C. None of these protects the timber on its own.

Many oil and stain problems start before the tin is opened. Oils and stains need bare, freshly sanded timber: any lacquer, wax or old oil left in the boards stops them soaking in evenly, so sand back to raw timber first.

Vacuum thoroughly and remove fine dust before colouring or oiling. WOCA specifies Intensive Wood Cleaner and at least 8 hours drying before Pre-colour, and Rubio's Raw Wood Cleaner does the same job before Oil Plus 2C. Check floor, room and product temperatures and timber moisture against the instructions.

Apply each product as directed and remove any excess oil, so the surface does not look wet.

Is oil or lacquer better for a timber floor?

Choose on look, traffic and upkeep. Oil keeps a natural look and feel, and worn areas can be refreshed with a maintenance oil without re-sanding the whole floor, but it needs regular care with the matching soap. A waterborne lacquer forms a film on the surface and is cleaned with a lacquer-safe soap such as WOCA Master Cleaner Soap. Hard-wearing oils such as WOCA Diamond Oil Active are also made for commercial floors.

What is the difference between a wood oil and a wood stain?

An oil protects the timber and can carry colour, as Oil Plus 2C and WOCA Diamond Oil Active do. A stain, lye or pre-colour mainly changes the colour and does not protect the floor on its own, so it must be finished with a compatible oil or lacquer. Many floors use both: a stain for tone, then an oil or lacquer over it.

Can you stain dense Australian hardwoods like spotted gum or blackbutt?

Yes, but results vary by species, so always test on an offcut of the same boards first. WOCA Pre-colour and WOCA Wood Lye are listed for all wood species, while reactive products such as WOCA Driftwood Lye and Ciranova Reactive Stain work best on oak. Tannin-rich timbers such as blackbutt can bleed tannin, which our blackbutt finishing guide covers.

How often does an oiled timber floor need maintenance?

It depends on the finish and the traffic. WOCA suggests Natural Soap weekly and Oil Refresher for quarterly maintenance. On Rubio Oil Plus 2C floors, clean regularly with Universal Soap and use Universal Maintenance Oil to refresh and nourish the finish. Always use the care products made for your finish.

Can I oil or stain over an existing lacquered floor?

No. Oils and stains need to reach bare timber, and a lacquer film stops them soaking in. Sand the floor back to raw timber, vacuum, and clean off the dust before you start. Rubio states that Oil Plus 2C must go onto raw wood or a Rubio pre-treatment, not over an existing stain or finish, so old oils and waxes also have to come off.
