Single-pack (1K) water-based polyurethane, often shortened to WBPU 1K, is ready to use straight from the tin. There is no hardener to measure, no pot life to manage and no mixed leftovers to throw away. The Berger-Seidle AquaSeal finishes on this page are 1-component waterborne coatings based on acrylic and polyurethane dispersions, and between them they cover ultra matt, matt and matt/satin sheens. They suit houses, apartments and other floors with normal to medium traffic, and they are a straightforward choice for finishers coating freshly sanded timber. Plan around the conditions on site, whether that is a humid coastal summer or a cold southern winter: low temperatures, high humidity and poor ventilation can all slow drying considerably.

How to choose a 1K water-based polyurethane

  • AquaSeal SmartHome (matt): a waterborne finish for all normal traffic areas with a good price-quality ratio. Berger-Seidle specifies it as a 3-coat system applied straight from the can, and each roller coat can be sanded and carefully walked on after about 3 to 4 hours.
  • AquaSeal EcoGold (matt/satin): the top of the AquaSeal 1K range, supplied ready to use and quick drying at 3 to 4 hours per coat. AquaSeal FlexPrimer is its recommended primer.
  • AquaSeal NordicWhite (ultra matt): a 1-component finish for medium traffic that gives timber a Nordic white colouring for a light, modern look. The number of coats sets how strong the whitening is.
  • Pick a compatible primer: AquaSeal FlexPrimer reduces edge bonding and lists all three finishes as compatible topcoats. Compare the other options in our timber floor sealers and primers.
  • Need more wear resistance? For commercial floors or heavy traffic, move up to 2K water-based polyurethane such as CeramicStar.

A 1K finish is simple to use, but the result still comes down to preparation. Sand back to bare timber and remove all sanding dust before the first coat.

Apply rich, even coats and do not stretch the finish thin with the roller, as the SmartHome data sheet directs. Let each coat dry before the next, and keep wear, rugs and care products off a new SmartHome floor for 7 days. SmartHome is not suitable for recoating prefinished floors or cork, so talk to our technical team before buying for those jobs.

Do I need a hardener with 1K water-based polyurethane?

No. A 1K, or single-pack, finish is ready to use from the tin, so there is nothing to mix and no pot life to watch. SmartHome, EcoGold and NordicWhite are all 1-component finishes. If the floor needs more resistance for commercial use or heavy wear, choose a 2K finish instead, which is mixed with a hardener shortly before application.

Is 1K water-based polyurethane durable enough for a family home?

For most homes, yes. SmartHome is made for all normal traffic areas, NordicWhite for medium traffic, and EcoGold sits at the top of the AquaSeal 1K range. For commercial floors or very heavy wear, a 2K such as CeramicStar, made for high-traffic residential and demanding commercial projects, is the better match. Keep wear, rugs and care products off a new SmartHome floor for 7 days.

How long does a 1K water-based floor finish take to dry between coats?

EcoGold dries in 3 to 4 hours per coat, and Berger-Seidle says a roller coat of SmartHome can be sanded and carefully walked on after about 3 to 4 hours. Insufficient ventilation, low temperatures, high humidity or thick coats can slow drying considerably. Full use takes longer: SmartHome's data sheet says no wear, rugs or care products for 7 days.

Which 1K finish gives timber floors a white, Nordic look?

AquaSeal NordicWhite. It is a 1-component, ultra matt finish that gives timber a Nordic white colouring for a light, modern look, and you control the strength of the whitening by the number of coats you apply. Try it on an offcut or a sample board from the same floor first so you can judge the colour before committing to the whole room.

Do I need a primer or sealer under a 1K water-based finish?

Yes, a sealer is recommended: SmartHome and EcoGold go on as one sealer coat plus 2 topcoats. AquaSeal FlexPrimer reduces edge bonding and lists SmartHome, EcoGold and NordicWhite as compatible topcoats. EcoGold's copy names it as the recommended primer and says it can give a more even finish in some cases. For SmartHome, use a single coat of FlexPrimer on most common timbers such as oak and pine, or ExoBloc or Uniquick Primer on tannin-rich timber.
