Decking oil protects a timber deck from the UV, rain and foot traffic it faces year round. This collection brings together the deck finishes EcoGrit stocks from WOCA and Rubio Monocoat, plus the cleaners, primer, soaps and sample sizes that go with them. It suits deck builders and flooring contractors as well as homeowners re-oiling merbau, spotted gum or pine decks. WOCA's penetrating oil works into the timber and protects without peeling or flaking, while Rubio's monocoats colour and protect in a single layer. Whichever you choose, the result depends on how well the deck is cleaned and dried first.

How to choose a decking oil

  • Penetrating oil. WOCA Exterior Wood Oil is plant-based and water-carried, with built-in UV protection and 13 colours including Natural, Merbau, Teak and Bangkirai. Coverage is 8 to 12 m² per litre.
  • One-layer monocoat. Rubio DuroGrit is a single-component finish with integrated colour pigments, in 16 colours. Rubio Hybrid Wood Protector has an integrated UV stabiliser; on decks and other horizontal surfaces, Rubio's instructions call for 10% Accelerator mixed in. Both are 0% VOC.
  • Softwood decks. WOCA Exterior Wood Primer goes under WOCA oil on untreated or highly absorbent softwoods such as pine or larch, and on older pressure-treated timber. It is not for red cedar or pressure-treated hardwood.
  • Clean a grey deck. Rubio Exterior Wood Cleaner removes grey discolouration, green deposits and dirt before a Rubio finish, and WOCA Exterior Wood Cleaner removes dirt, mould and green growth before WOCA oil.
  • Test the colour. Try the WOCA 25 ml sample pack, DuroGrit 30 ml or Hybrid Wood Protector 20 ml on your own boards before buying full tins.
  • Keep it clean. Rubio Exterior Soap, also sold as a ready-to-use Ecospray, cleans and maintains decks finished with Hybrid Wood Protector or DuroGrit.

Re-oiling a Deck: Getting the Timing Right

Decks rarely wear evenly. Boards in full sun and along the main walkways lose protection first, while shaded corners can still look fine. Walk the deck before summer and look for boards that have turned dry, pale or grey.

Plan the job for a dry spell. WOCA's instructions call for dry weather, out of direct sun and heat, and WOCA says to let the timber dry for at least 24 to 48 hours after washing.

Between maintenance coats, keep the deck clean. Rubio Exterior Soap is made for exterior wood finished with Hybrid Wood Protector or DuroGrit, and WOCA Exterior Wood Cleaner can be diluted for regular cleaning.

Which decking oil suits hardwood decks like merbau and spotted gum?

WOCA Exterior Wood Oil, Rubio DuroGrit and Rubio Hybrid Wood Protector can all be used on hardwood decks. Choose WOCA for a penetrating oil in colours such as Natural, Merbau and Teak, or a Rubio monocoat for colour and protection in one layer. Each species changes how a colour looks, so test a sample on your own boards before buying full tins.

How often should I re-oil a timber deck?

There is no fixed interval, because exposure decides. Decks in full sun and busy walkways need attention sooner than shaded or covered areas. Splash some water on the boards: if it beads, the finish is still working; if it soaks in quickly, clean the deck and apply a maintenance coat as the product instructions direct.

Do I need to clean or sand a deck before applying decking oil?

Yes. Clean it with WOCA Exterior Wood Cleaner before WOCA oil, or Rubio Exterior Wood Cleaner before a Rubio finish, then let it dry completely; WOCA says at least 24 to 48 hours. Sand rough fibres: WOCA specifies 120 grit, and Rubio's DuroGrit instructions finish decking at 80 grit, with any old stain, oil, lacquer or varnish fully removed first. For Hybrid Wood Protector, Rubio also asks for old finish residues to be sanded off.

Does Rubio Hybrid Wood Protector need an accelerator on decks?

Yes. Rubio's instructions for horizontal surfaces such as terraces and outdoor furniture call for 10% Accelerator (the B component), measured precisely and mixed well into Hybrid Wood Protector. Once mixed, use it within 4 to 6 hours. DuroGrit is a single-component finish and is not mixed with an accelerator. How many coats of decking oil does a deck need?

It depends on the product. Rubio DuroGrit and Hybrid Wood Protector are designed to colour and protect in one layer, although Rubio notes a second layer of DuroGrit may be needed on very grey, weathered wood for appearance. For WOCA Exterior Wood Oil, apply a thin, even coat, and finish Black, Anthracite or Walnut with a final coat of Natural.
