Two-component (2K, or 2-pack) water-based polyurethane is mixed with its hardener shortly before use. The hardener reaction builds a highly resistant film, which is why these finishes are specified for high-traffic homes, busy kitchens and hallways, and commercial floors. Every product on this page is a Berger-Seidle AquaSeal 2K finish for timber floors. In Australian conditions, plan your coats around the weather on site: heat and low humidity shorten drying time, while cold, humid or poorly ventilated rooms lengthen it considerably.

How to choose a 2K water-based polyurethane

  • AquaSeal CeramicStar: ceramic-reinforced for extreme abrasion resistance, made for high-traffic residential and demanding commercial projects, and effective at blocking old residues on renovation jobs. Choose ultra matt, satin/matt or semi-gloss. Floors can be put to use after 12 hours.
  • AquaSeal GreenStar: free of hazard labelling, hardener included, with no isocyanate and a pot life of at least 18 hours. Approved for cork floors. Matt or semi-gloss.
  • AquaSeal SmartStar: a good-value 2K for high-traffic areas in homes and commercial settings, applied as 2 topcoats over one sealer coat and at full load after 72 hours.
  • AquaSeal 2KPU NaturalWhite: an extremely matt, almost invisible finish with outstanding chemical resistance, ready to walk on after 24 hours.
  • AquaSeal 2KPU RoyalMat: a 4% sheen finish, the lowest matt level in the range, that Berger-Seidle rates as ideal for dark timbers, because it gives a finish free of white cast.
  • Start with the right primer: FlexPrimer lists CeramicStar, SmartStar and NaturalWhite as compatible topcoats and is the recommended first coat under RoyalMat and NaturalWhite, while ExoBloc suits exotic species and stained floors. Compare them in our timber floor sealers and primers.

Mixing and Applying a 2K Finish

Mixing and Applying a 2K Finish

Mix each finish with its hardener at 10:1, stir thoroughly and let the mix rest for 10 minutes where the data sheet asks for it. Mix only what you can roll out within the pot life.

Apply CeramicStar, GreenStar, SmartStar and RoyalMat in rich coats by roller or brush; unlike solvent-based finishes, they should not be stretched thin. Check the NaturalWhite data sheet for its own coat build. On highly absorbent species such as beech, maple and ash, roll rather than trowel. Limit coats per day as each data sheet directs, so the timber can release the water it absorbs, and keep rugs and care products off for 7 days.

Questions about our 2K Water-Based Polyurethane?

What is the difference between 1K and 2K (2-pack) water-based polyurethane?

A 2K finish is mixed with a hardener shortly before use and must be applied within its pot life. The reaction gives a more resistant film, so 2K suits high-traffic homes and commercial floors. A 1K finish is ready to use from the tin with nothing to mix, and suits most residential floors. CeramicStar and SmartStar are 2K; SmartHome and EcoGold are 1K.

How long does 2K water-based polyurethane take before the floor can be used?

It depends on the product. CeramicStar can be walked on carefully after 3 to 4 hours and used after 12 hours. Both 2KPU finishes can be walked on after 24 hours, GreenStar can be put to use after 48 hours and SmartStar reaches full load after 72 hours. With all of them, keep rugs off and hold maintenance products for at least 7 days.

How long is the pot life once the hardener is mixed in?

CeramicStar, SmartStar and RoyalMat should be used within about 2 hours of mixing. The mix may stay liquid for longer, but the dried film will not perform as it should. GreenStar has a pot life of at least 18 hours, which gives more working time on large floors. Mix only what you can apply, and do not seal mixed SmartStar or RoyalMat airtight, as they release carbon dioxide.

Is the hardener in 2K water-based polyurethane hazardous?

Treat it with care. SmartStar's listing warns that AquaSeal Hardener is harmful if inhaled and may cause allergic skin reactions, so wear gloves and eye protection, ventilate the room and read the safety data sheet. GreenStar's copy states that the product, hardener included, is free of hazard labelling and contains no isocyanate, although its data sheet still asks you to avoid skin and eye contact and use adequate ventilation.

Can I apply 2K polyurethane over a prefinished or engineered floor?

If the boards have been sanded back to bare timber, prime and coat them like any sanded floor. Recoating a factory finish is different: Berger-Seidle says GreenStar and RoyalMat adhere to many prefinished floors, but adhesion must be tested for each brand. Their data sheets recommend a thorough clean, a damp mop with clean water and careful screening with 120 grit before coating.
