Rubio Monocoat: 0% VOC Hardwax Oil Wood Finish
Rubio Monocoat is a Belgian manufacturer producing molecular-bonding wood finishes that colour and protect timber in a single coat. Their Oil Plus 2C contains 0% VOC and binds to the wood fibre through a molecular reaction rather than sitting on the surface as a film.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does "molecular bonding" mean?
Unlike film-forming finishes (lacquers) that sit on the surface, Oil Plus 2C bonds at the molecular level with the wood cellulose. The oil becomes part of the wood fibre. This means no peeling, no flaking, and no visible wear-through patterns. When the surface wears, simply sand the affected area lightly and reapply — the new oil blends seamlessly with the surrounding finish.
How many coats does Oil Plus 2C need?
One coat only. The molecular bonding technology means the wood fibre can only absorb one layer of oil. Applying a second coat will not improve protection and may cause a tacky surface. One coat, done.
Can I spot-repair a Rubio Monocoat floor?
Yes — this is one of the biggest advantages. Sand the damaged area with 120-150 grit, apply Oil Plus 2C in the same colour, wipe off excess, and the repair blends invisibly with the surrounding floor. No lap marks, no colour variation.
What is the difference between Oil Plus 2C and DuroGrit?
Oil Plus 2C is an interior hardwax oil for floors, furniture, and joinery. DuroGrit is a tinted exterior oil designed for decking, cladding, and outdoor timber. DuroGrit includes UV stabilisers and additional weather resistance that Oil Plus 2C does not have.
How do I maintain a Rubio Monocoat floor?
Weekly cleaning with Universal Soap (diluted in water). Periodic refreshing with Refresh Eco when the surface starts to look dry or dull — typically every 1-2 years depending on traffic. Surface Care spray for spot treatment between full refreshes.
Is Rubio Monocoat safe for food-contact surfaces?
Yes. Oil Plus 2C is certified food-safe once fully cured (approximately 5 days). Suitable for kitchen benchtops, cutting boards, dining tables, and children's furniture.
