Why Lacquer is a Reliable Timber Floor Finish

Is lacquer more protective than oil finishes?

Yes, lacquer creates a strong surface barrier that shields timber from scratches, spills, and everyday wear. Oil finishes soak into the timber and highlight the natural grain, but they do not provide the same level of surface protection. Lacquer is the better choice for high traffic areas or homes that need a more durable finish.

How many coats of lacquer are needed?

Most floors need two to three coats to achieve proper coverage and long lasting durability. Multiple coats help build a stronger protective layer that resists damage and wear. Always allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next one to ensure a smooth result.

Can lacquer be used on engineered timber floors?

Yes, lacquer is suitable for engineered timber as long as the surface is sanded and prepared correctly. The coating bonds well to engineered boards and enhances their resistance to moisture and wear. It also helps maintain the appearance of the timber for many years.

Does water based lacquer last as long as solvent based lacquer?

Modern water based lacquers have improved significantly and now offer strong durability for residential and commercial use. They are low in odour, dry faster, and are easier to work with in enclosed spaces. Solvent based lacquers may still have an edge in extremely heavy traffic areas, but water based options perform well for most projects.

How do I maintain lacquered floors long term?
