Berger-Seidle AquaSeal 2K PU: Europe's workhorse on Aussie hardwood

Berger-Seidle is a 150-year-old German manufacturer specialising in timber coatings for commercial and high-end residential applications. Their AquaSeal 2K PU has been the benchmark water-based two-component polyurethane in the European trade since the early 2000s and has been progressively adopted across Australia as specifiers have moved away from solvent-based polyurethanes for health, environmental, and cure-window reasons.

The product is certified to AS/NZS 4858 (water-based coatings for timber floors), holds DIN EN 12720 chemical resistance certification, and meets EU 2004/42/EC VOC directive at 85 g/L.

For the full water-based 1K vs 2K comparison, see our dedicated 2K article. In summary: the isocyanate hardener creates dense cross-links that increase abrasion resistance by 20-30% (Taber test, DIN 53754), raise chemical resistance to commercial benchmarks, and improve heat resistance.

For Australian hardwood, the 2K variant is particularly valuable because:

  • Denser film resists tannin push-through from Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Jarrah
  • Higher scratch resistance matters on harder species where scratch contrast is more visible
  • Heat resistance accommodates summer floor-surface temperatures reaching 50 C in north-facing rooms

System components

  • AquaSeal FlexPrimer - water-based primer with stain-blocking for Australian hardwood extractives. Mandatory over Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Jarrah, Ironbark.
  • AquaSeal 2K PU - the topcoat. Available in ultra-matte (deep matte look), matte, satin, and gloss.
  • AquaSeal Hardener - 10% by weight (2K component B).
  • AquaSeal Pafuki - 2K with UV-stabiliser additives for sun-exposed floors. Can substitute for AquaSeal 2K PU in high-UV environments.

ATFA-aligned application procedure

This protocol follows both the Berger-Seidle published TDS and the ATFA Code of Practice for Coating of Timber Floors.

Environmental conditions

  • Ambient temperature: 15-25 C (outside this range, adjust product open time and dry time accordingly)
  • Relative humidity: 40-60% (above 65%, dry time extends significantly; below 30%, skin time shortens)
  • Timber moisture content: 9-14% for Australian hardwood, verified per AS 1080.1

Sanding

  1. 40 grit, 60 grit, 80 grit, 100 grit, 120 grit
  2. For engineered flooring, final at 120 only (do not exceed to preserve wear layer)
  3. Water popping optional (see our water popping guide)
  4. Buff at 120 grit with 12-inch buffer
  5. Vacuum and tack-rag

Primer coat

  1. Apply AquaSeal FlexPrimer with T-bar or lambswool roller at 8-10 m²/L
  2. Dry time: 45 minutes at 20 C / 50% RH
  3. Inter-coat abrasion: 150 grit mesh or 120 mesh screen on 12-inch buffer
  4. Vacuum and tack-rag

Topcoat

  1. Mix AquaSeal 2K PU with Hardener at 10% by weight. Use a clean, dry stir stick. Stir 1 minute, stand 10 minutes, stir again 30 seconds.
  2. Pot life: 2 hours at 20 C. Mark the mixing time on the bucket.
  3. Apply with lambswool roller or T-bar at 10-12 m²/L
  4. Dry to recoat: 2-3 hours at 20 C
  5. Inter-coat abrasion: 180 grit mesh, vacuum, tack
  6. Second topcoat: same procedure

Cure schedule

  • Foot traffic: 8 hours
  • Light furniture: 48 hours
  • Rugs: 14 days
  • Full chemical resistance: 7 days
  • Full mechanical cure: 14 days

Common errors and remediation

  • Milky / cloudy film after dry: moisture trapped in the film. Cause: humidity above 70% or applied onto damp primer. Remediation: buff and recoat.
  • Sticky / tacky film after 48 hours: hardener under-dosed or old. Remediation: light sand, reapply with fresh hardener.
  • Visible roller tracks: product applied too thin or buffer used for final coat. Use T-bar or lambswool roller only for the final coat.
  • Pinholes in high-humidity areas: moisture blistering. Pre-condition the space to below 65% RH for 24 hours before applying.
